Most radio scanner setups require someone hunched over a desk interpreting calls. Scanner Command changes that. It listens to public safety traffic, transcribes it locally using Whisper, and drops color-coded pins on a map within 30 seconds of a transmission ending.
The system is built for off-grid use. While online, it learns local street names, unit callsigns, and talkgroups to build a custom dictionary. Map tiles and geocoding are all cached. If the power drops, the box runs on a backup battery and WiFi, serving a live neighborhood incident map to anyone nearby.
Hardware and Aircraft Tracking
The hardware stack is simple. A Uniden SDS200 handles trunked digital public safety. Two RTL-SDR dongles manage the rest—one decodes ADS-B data, and the other grabs VHF airband audio.
The best feature is the airband correlation. The software pulls spoken callsigns out of the VHF audio and geometrically matches them to ADS-B aircraft tracks. Click a plane on the map, and you hear exactly what the pilot just said. It fits right in with other custom SDR tools we've been running lately.
Demo and Availability
Right now, the software is closed source. The creator, Benjamin Blood, has a live demo up replaying two days of real Los Angeles traffic. A waitlist for early access is available on the project's site.
